An American political advocate has appeared to compare Barack Obama to Darth Vader and his New Year comments on gun control to the evil Galactic Empire in Star Wars.
Grover Norquist (pictured below), founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform - a conservative pressure group - took to Twitter to denounce Obama’s speech in which he vowed to use "whatever power this office holds" to address gun violence in the US.
Obama said 2016 would be the year to act, having received "too many letters from parents, teachers and kids to sit around doing nothing". The president has until now been left frustrated by Congress after attempting to tighten gun laws.
In response, Norquist used the sci-fi movie franchise Star Wars in a Twitter rant about freedom and the constitution.
He noted the second amendment, which reads:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
The comments came just as an armed militia took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon in protest of the pending imprisonment of two ranchers.
Norquist didn't mention the situation in his bizarre outburst, instead directing his frustration at Obama:
To understand what Obama wants in our future.... ....Watch the Star Wars movies and imagine that only the storm troopers have guns.— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
I said Obama wanted to trash the second amendment. Not that he was winning. He is losing and will be defeated. https://t.co/9xeBif4XVc— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
The 59-year-old suggested outlawing suicide would be a viable alternative
Why does Obama rant about gun control? We could solve 2/3 of gun deaths by outlawing suicide. Let's try that first.— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
Norquist also appears to have compared the US president to Darth Vader...
Darth Vader supports gun control.— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
The staunch Republican did make his tweets out to be a joke at one point
When did they pass the law making it illegal for liberals to have a sense of humor Did they drink too much in Brazil and wake up w/out one.— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
But then said this...
An armed people are a free people. If our forefathers were not armed before the American Revolution we would all be speaking English today.— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) January 2, 2016
Whatever you say Grover. Whatever you say...
